Rhinoceros

RhinoMedRhinoceros (French original title Rhinocéros) is a play by Eugène Loeso, written in 1959. The play belongs to the school of drama known as the theatre of the absurd. Over the course of three acts, the inhabitants of a small, provincial French town turn into rhinoceroses; the central character, Bérenger, a flustered everyman figure who is often criticized throughout the play for his drinking and tardiness, is ultimately the only human who does not succumb to this mass metamorphosis. The play is often read as a response to the sudden upsurge of Fascism and Nazism during the events preceding World War II, and explores the themes of conformity, culture, philosophy, and morality. - Wikipedia

"Rhinoceros" Nominated for 13 Cappie Awards!

The winter production of Eugène Loeso's "Rhinoceros" has garnered 13 nominations from the prestegious Cappies, the critics and awards program for high school theatre.

"Rhinoceros" Wins Six Cappies

It was a big night for South Plantation High School's Theater Department, particularly the unsung heroes of the technical crew, as 6 students were awarded Cappies for their work on the 2007 winter production of Eugene Loeso's 1959 absurdist play, "Rhinoceros".

Here is a list of the six winning catagories and the recipients who were honored:

  • Cameo Actor in a Play: Bryon Orr
  • Cameo Actress in a Play: Anika Gomez
  • Stage Crew: Joe Rawda
  • Lighting: James Parrott
  • Sound: Rene Martinez
  • Costumes: Kellie Smith

Throughout the ceremony all nominated high schools performed select scenes from their respective plays. The Paladin Players chose to perform the very last scene from "Rhinoceros". It is a powerful ensemble scene where the protagonist, Berenger ( Mario Aivazian), faced with the fact that his entire town has succumbed to becoming Rhinoceroses, has to decide whether he will become one himself or choose to stand alone in his individuality. We are pleased to be able to share this clip from this Cappie performance.

Cappies are the critics and awards program for high school theatre. The ceremony was held at the Broward Center For Performing Arts on Monday, May 19, 2008.
